Flaxford Keep Encounters

Foundations Level

These directly into the foundations and preserved beneath the ruins of the keep.

Foundations.jpg

Throughout this level of the keep the repurposed foundations have been floored with solid, rough-cut, limed timber. They are in the main well preserved, though in some areas such as the Well Tower foundations they have been rotted away. To the bare earth beneath.

The walls are a mixture of rough mortared stone for the supporting walls and brick for the dividing walls. The stone is impassable but the brick could be smashed through with the correct tools. Most doors are sufficiently strong to hold out vermin but would give way to a solid shove (DC 15) some doors such as at the entrance to the North Tower foundations are much more solid (DC 23) and characters will generally be unable to break them down.

The Octagon Catacombs

Beneath the octagonal courtyard these foundation chambers fill a large groin vaulted void, originally built to flatten out the top part of the bluff. Within this architectural space dividing walls have been added in haphazard fashion to create storage chambers. Within the lifetime of the keep the storage was in fact surplus to requirements and fell into disuse and disrepair. Now, whilst structurally sound the place is certainly not habitable to anything but vermin.

Keep Cellars

This space beneath the keep has a much lower ceiling. Again groin vaulted, but this time from brick rather than the stone of the Octagon Catacombs, this weaker structure has collapsed in many areas and what remains sags dangerously. The Blueface goblins have tunnelled back into this space having come up from the lower gate, and there is a large amount of wooden bracing and struts supporting the ceiling now.

Upper Defences

Beneath the foundations and cellars are the upper defences. Originally these connected the Lower Gate at the cliff base with the keep above, and as such they are made up from a series of easily defended bottlenecks and killing zones. The Blueface goblins have gained acess through the lower gate and tunnelled up into the foundation cellars from below.

Upper Defences

Lower Gate

Opening out from the cliff base, at one time this entrance provided a heavily defended entrance to the keep itself. Following the keep's destruction the gates were bricked up but the Blueface goblins have removed the bricks and set up home within.
